ADLib Glossary (C)

This is a biological process in which the organic portion of waste is allowed to decompose under carefully controlled conditions. Microbes breakdown (metabolise) the organic waste material and reduce its volume by as much as 50 percent. The stabilised product is called compost or humus and is suitable for recovery by spreading on land, used as cover at landfills or incorporating into growing media.
