Department of Trade and Industry

The responsibilities of this department are now those of the Department for Business Innovation & Skills.

The Department of Trade and Industry ("DTI") had a wide remit in respect of the environment. Relevant divisions include the energy technology division, the coal division, the business task force division 1 (Branches 1, 2 and 3) and the economics, market intelligence and statistics division (Branch 6).

The DTI was responsible for policy on science and technology research and development as well as industrial policy. It also served as a research and scientific centre via its laboratories which were:

  • The Laboratory of the Government Chemist;
  • The National Physical Laboratory;
  • The National Engineering Laboratory; and
  • The National Weights and Measures Laboratory.
