The Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA) was established on 1 April 2005 to curb the exploitation of workers in the Agriculture, Horticulture, Shellfish Gathering and Associated Processing and Packaging Industries. Ethical trading and production is an important issue and it is unacceptable that food is picked, produced or packed by an exploited worker.

The GLA has been given the powers to curb this abuse in the UK. By licensing Gangmasters, everyone in the food supply chain will ultimately be able to distinguish the legal operators from the illegal ones.
