Definition:
Agricultural benefit (waste)
The waste being spread must improve the soil for the growing of crops or for grazing.
The potential benefit to agriculture include:
Type of benefit |
Example Activity |
Why it confers benefit |
Improvement of soil nutrient content |
Addition of nitrogen rich waste |
Is a nutrient required for plant growth and increased crop yield. |
Improvement of soil chemical properties |
Addition of lime-rich waste |
Adjustment of the soil pH allows more efficient uptake of certain nutrients. |
Improvement of soil physical properties |
Addition of waste organic matter |
Improves the workability of heavy soils, increase drought resistance of light soils and stabilise poorly structured soils. |
Improvement of soil moisture content |
Addition of watery waste |
Adds moisture to soil in dry conditions (therefore there is no benefit to spreading in wet conditions, washes surface applied fertilisers down to the roots of the crop. |
