Catchment Sensitive Farming: Practical Tips

Practical Tip: Riparian buffer strips

Riparian buffer strips are most effective at retaining sediment when overland flow is shallow and slow, therefore they are particularly, suited to low-lying and gently undulating landscapes where the topography does not concentrate the flow into channels. They are potentially applicable to all farming systems. It is recommended that strips be as wide as possible and are kept free from fertiliser, herbicides (except to spot treat or weed wipe for the control of injurious weeds), or invasive alien species (e.g. Himalayan balsam, rhododendron or Japanese knotweed), pesticides and machinery.

If you are considering creating buffer strips to comply with Environmental Stewardship, please visit the Defra website for further guidance.
