General Description:

The Medicines (Veterinary Drugs) (Pharmacy and Merchants) list Order provides for certain exemptions from the restrictions imposed by the Medicines (Veterinary) Act, which restricts the retail or supply of certain medicinal products to a registered pharmacy by, or under the supervision, of a pharmacist. This Order was amended annually until 1998 when it was replaced by the Medicines (Exemptions for Merchants in veterinary drugs) Order.

The Order provides

  • A master list of the products affected by the regulations to be kept by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. This is made available to any inquirer on request.
  • The Codes of Practice for Distributors and Saddlers to be separated from the current legislation and to become an industry standard of good practice.

Also in 1998 the Certificate of Competence required for the purchase of Organophosphate sheep dips was extended to cover all types of sheep dip - i.e. includes the synthetic pyrethroids.
