Hazardous Waste Directive (1991/689)

Title: The Hazardous Waste Directive

Category: EU Directive

Date: 1994

References: 91/689/EEC [Full text]

General Description:

This Directive seeks to harmonise the laws of EC Member States on the controlled management of hazardous wastes and supersedes the previous Directive 78/319/EEC which was implemented in the UK by the Control of Pollution (Special Wastes) Regulations. These new regulations are now implemented by the Special Waste Regulations.

Currently, the Commission is drafting an amendment to Hazardous Waste Directive 91/689/EEC, in order to fulfil the mandate in Article 1 (5). to bring hazardous household waste into its scope and expects to issue a formal Council Directive during the course of 1998. The preliminary draft proposed amendment extends the scope of the mandate to include not only waste from households but waste from commercial, industrial and institutional premises (hospitals, schools etc.) as well as other hazardous waste, which because of its nature or composition is similar to hazardous waste from households.

This Directive is implemented in the UK by the Special Waste (Amendment) Regulations 1997
