General Description:

This Directive, often known as the 'general Directive' on the protection of farm animals puts into EU law a general requirement that farmers take all reasonable steps to ensure the welfare of animals under their care. It sets general standards and provides a framework for the development of detailed measures on the welfare of particular species of livestock. These include the need for regular inspection of stock, appropriate lighting and provision of feed and water.

In the UK this Directive has been implemented by the Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations and the Welfare of Farmed Animals (Scotland) Regulations.
