Local Authority Environmental Health Department

This local service is usually administered by the District Council, and has wide ranging responsibilities and the power of prosecution to enforce regulations and legislation.

Its areas of responsibility will typically include:

  • food hygiene and food safety;
  • control of infectious diseases;
  • health and safety at work;
  • pollution control - including statutory nuisance and litter control;
  • animal welfare;
  • pest control;
  • private water supplies;
  • private sector housing; and
  • health promotion.

To cover these areas of responsibility Environmental Health Departments usually employ a wide range of specialists from scientists in the Departments' own laboratories, to inspectors of food business premises.
