From the beginning of October 2006 English Nature, the environment activities of the Rural Development Service and the Countryside Agency's Landscape, Access and Recreation division will be united in a single body called Natural England.

Natural England aims to ensure that the natural environment is conserved, enhanced, and managed for the benefit of present and future generations, thereby contributing to sustainable development.

It is responsible for ensuring that England's unique natural environment, including its land, flora and fauna, freshwater and marine environments, geology and soils, are protected and improved. It also has the responsibility to help people enjoy, understand and access the natural environment.
