Centre for Exploration of Science and Technology (CEST)

CEST was established in 1987 following the publication of a report by the Advisory Council for Applied Research and Development (ACARD) entitled 'Exploitable Areas of Science'. The report focused on reviewing why the UK was a strong performer in scientific research and development but was a relatively poor performer with regard to exploiting such research.

The aim of CEST is to identify new business opportunities, especially those arising from developments in science and technology, and to exploit those opportunities for real business benefit.

CEST has been very active in bridging the gaps between industry and academia, between industry and Government, and between different industry sectors.

The organisation comprises of the CEST Research Fund and CEST Programmes Ltd.. The research fund supports a wide range of research in a great diversity of topic areas, such as:

  • plant biotechnology foresight programme;
  • transport, health and environment;
  • waste management;
  • automotive recycling;
  • plant and animal biotechnology; and
  • animal genetics.
