The British Cattle Movement service (BCMS) has been set up to manage the Cattle Tracing System (CTS). They will, among other things, issue cattle passports, process cattle movement information received from farmers and respond to queries.

The Cattle Tracing System

In 1996, a livestock industry working group recommended that there should be a computerised Cattle Tracing System (CTS). The government agreed with the recommendation and there is now a requirement by the s a EU for all member States to have such a system by the end of 1999. There is already such a system in Northern Ireland which has been managed to great effect.

The CTS will be launched in September 1998, when a computerised system will be used to register cattle and their movements from birth to death. It will hold details of all cattle registered or imported into Great Britain. The CTS will build on the existing cattle passport system which, since 1996, has recorded the registration details of all cattle born or imported into Great Britain.

The CTS will enable easy checks on where cattle have been throughout their lives. It will enable cattle to be traced more easily if, for example, there is a disease outbreak. It will, also, give greater assurance to buyers about the history of the animal and so build increased confidence in British cattle and British beef.
