ADLib Glossary (S)

Definition:

Secure Storage / Stored securely (waste)

Often an exemption will say that a waste has to be stored securely in either a container or a place so check which one it is.

The term "secure" means that reasonable precautions have been taken to ensure that waste cannot escape and members of the public cannot gain access to that waste.

The type of containment needed depends on the nature of the waste being stored. If it is a toxic chemical waste it may need to be stored in a sealed drum in a locked building that can contain any accidental spillage. If it is clean waste gravel it may be adequate for it to be stored on the ground with no additional containment.
