Odour & its Control

There are various actions that can be taken to reduce the possibility of causing public nuisance with foul odours. General guidance can be found in the DEFRA Code of Good Agricultural Practice for the Protection of Air however a summary of good practice in this area is given below.

Odour Control

  • Avoid spreading odorous substances close to residential or leisure areas;
  • When preparing to spread odorous materials consider the wind direction and avoid peak leisure/recreation periods such as weekends and bank holidays;
  • Avoid spreading odorous materials near footpaths and roads;
  • Odours are often produced when stored wastes are disturbed (i.e. by agitation, stirring, turning, or when emptying and filling tanks). Consequently operators should plan such activities in order to reduce the chance of nuisance;
  • Band Spreading from dribble bars carried on a boom can reduce odour emissions when compared with conventional splash plate splash-plate spreading devices. Injection will reduce odours still further especially if the injection holes are closed by rolling.
