Crop Diseases - Definition

In order to safeguard and improve the health and quality of commercially produced plants and plant products in the UK, DEFRA apply controls in England and Wales to implement EC plant health regulations. Outbreaks of the following pests have been identified in the UK in recent years: Rhizomania, Tobacco Whitefly, South American Leaf Miner, Colarado Beetle and Potato Brown Rot.

Potato Cyst Nematodes:

This is the most important pest of potatoes throughout the UK. Infestation is normally first noticed as patches of stunted plants which easily wilt. Root systems are shortened and the small spherical, yellow cysts are attached to the roots. Yields will be reduced.
