The Allerton Project is a practical demonstration of the integration of game and wildlife conservation with profitable farming. Its aims are:

  • To develop a system of profitable farming and land use which is compatible with the conservation of wild game and other wildlife, incorporating the principles of 'wise use'.
  • To carry out research into the relationship between farming methods and wildlife conservation.
  • To provide practical, research-based information, including conservation costs to those interested and involved in managing the countryside.

The project is based on the 333 hectare (824 acre) Loddington Estate in Leicestershire, owned by the Allerton Research and Educational Trust, which was established in 1992 as a memorial to Lord and Lady Allerton, the previous owners of the estate. The project is a partnership between the Allerton Trust and The Game Conservancy Trust, which carries out management and research on the estate. The farm profit and loss account is published annually in The Game Conservancy Trust's Review, including the costs of conservation work on the farm.
