Statutory Codes - Definition

Statutory codes are codes which are authorised and controlled by law. This means that, if you do not keep to the code, it will be an offence and you may be prosecuted.

Statutory Codes within agriculture in the UK include:

Following a Statutory Code will not provide a defence such as best practicable means if you cause pollution or harm. You do not have a legal obligation to follow a non-statutory code. However, if a problem, such as environmental pollution occurs, and you have not followed the appropriate code of practice this could be held against in court.
