Directive on the Landfill of Waste (Landfill Directive) (1999/31)

Title: The Directive on The Landfill of Waste (Landfill Directive)

Category: EU Directive

Date: 1999

References: 99/31/EC [Full text]

General Description:

Around 60% of waste in the European Union is land-filled and this has become a major problem. Therefore the main goal of this Directive on the landfill of waste is to encourage waste prevention by its recycling and recovery. To do so, the Directive establishes high standards for the treatment of waste in the EU and discourages, as much as it can, their disposal (a source of water, air and ground pollution, and with harmful effects for human health). One of the essential elements is a gradual reduction in of municipal biodegradable waste. This waste will have to be reduced to 75% of its weight by 2002 compared to 1993. The Directive bans the disposal of most used tyres to landfill and also bans the co-disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste in the same landfill.
