In April 1996 several of the UKs regulatory bodies were merged into a single organisation known as the Environment Agency (which incorporated HMIP, NRA and the Waste Regulatory bodies).

The majority of the original offices of HMIP and NRA have remained operating under the new Environment Agency banner. Their original responsibilities were retained. The merger was set up by the Government to ensure efficiency and an integrated approach to environmental control.

The Environment Agency delivers a service to its customers and aims to be cost effective and efficient. It aims to offer the best service possible and value for money.
